Health

Travelers to Uganda may be at risk for several potential health issues that require vaccinations and other preventive measures. Some of the diseases for which vaccination is recommended before traveling to Uganda include:

  1. Yellow Fever: Vaccination against yellow fever is REQUIRED for all travellers over the age of one year entering Uganda. This is to prevent the spread of the disease, which is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

  2. Hepatitis A and B: Both Hepatitis A and B are prevalent in Uganda, and vaccination is recommended for travellers to protect against these viral infections that affect the liver.

  3. Typhoid: Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. Vaccination is recommended for travellers visiting areas with poor sanitation and hygiene practices.

  4. Malaria: Malaria is a prevalent disease in Uganda, transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Travelers are advised to take antimalarial medication and use mosquito repellent to prevent infection.

  5. Meningitis: Outbreaks of meningitis occur in Uganda, particularly during the dry season. Vaccination is recommended for travellers, especially if visiting crowded areas or participating in mass gatherings.

It is important for travellers to consult with a healthcare provider or travel medicine specialist before visiting Uganda to receive appropriate vaccinations and preventive measures based on their individual health status and travel itinerary.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with the Embassy of Uganda to ensure the medication is legal in Uganda. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.
