Transport

There are several modes of transportation one can use when travelling Uganda. A variety of options are available to suit different preferences and budgets. Whether you’re exploring the cities or venturing into the countryside, here are the main modes of transportation within Uganda:

  1. Matatus: These are minibuses that operate as a form of public transportation in Uganda. They are often overcrowded and offer affordable fares for short distances within the city.

  2. Boda bodas: Motorcycles are a popular mode of transport in Uganda, especially in urban areas. Boda bodas are motorcycle taxis that offer a quick and convenient way to get around for a relatively low cost.

  3. Taxis: Taxis are readily available in major cities in Uganda and offer a more comfortable and private mode of transportation compared to matatus and boda bodas. These taxis can be hailed on the streets or booked through a taxi company.

  4. Buses: There are several bus companies in Uganda that operate long-distance routes between cities and towns. These buses are a popular choice for travelers looking to explore different parts of the country.

  5. Private cars: Many Ugandans own their own cars and use them for daily transportation. However, owning a car can be costly, so it is mostly middle and upper-class individuals who have this option.

  6. Planes: Uganda has several domestic airports and airstrips that serve as hubs for domestic flights. Flying is a convenient and efficient way to travel long distances within the country, especially to remote or hard-to-reach areas. Companies like Eagle Air, Uganda Airlines, and Fly Uganda offer domestic flights to various destinations in Uganda.

  7. Ferries: Uganda is a landlocked country with several lakes and rivers, so ferries are an important mode of transport for crossing bodies of water. The most popular ferry service in Uganda is the MV Kalangala, which operates on Lake Victoria, providing transportation between the mainland and islands like Ssese Islands. Ferries are used for both passenger and cargo transportation, and they offer a scenic way to travel across the water.
